UK RATIFIES UN CONVENTION AGAINST CORRUPTION (14/02/06)

Progress in combatting corruption took a step forward today when the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw announced UK ratification of the UN Convention Against Corruption(UNCAC).

UNCAC is the first global anti-corruption instrument focusing on prevention, criminal law enforcement, international legal co-operation, asset recovery and monitoring.

The Foreign Secretary announced the ratification during his visit to Nigeria. Jack Straw, MP said:“Corruption has become an issue of major political and economic significance in recent years and the international community must take co-ordinated measures to confront the problem. I am pleased to announce that the UK has now ratified the UN Convention Against Corruption, demonstrating our continuing commitment to tackling the issue.”
